The future of mobility

This project was the exam delivery of Tjenestedesign 2: Prototyping og simulering’ during the spring of 2020. With an analyzing and creative mind we* were to create a scenario picturing the state of mobility in the future. The process required a deep analysis of existing services and user needs, and a bold statement: ‘We wish to create a concept for the future of mobility that will be as effective and comfortable as possible, for its users’

Focus on what’s possible

A multisided aspect of a futuristic service for mobility relies on good information and clear information flows. To create the most efficient and best strategic service possible, we developed an idea about ONE app for ALL your travel needs. A position we feel confident that Vy will be able to comfortably take in the future.

From analysis to a full experience

To start off this project right we wrote down three hypotheses about what the users actually need. The first one was that the users need more frequent departures for better accessibility, both on the system as a whole, but also for actual space on the different mediums. A more cost efficient service, where there’s more fluidity in the cost of shorter rides versus longer rides was the second. The third was seamless transportation.

Our dedicated insights, consisting of article research, and in-depth interviews, street interviews and observation of actual users showed us that our hypotheses were in line with reality. The future of mobility will offer new possibilities within technology and intelligent transport systems, and the digitalization in combination with more frequent use of transportation systems has a lot of potential. Roads of the future will mainly be built to accommodate public transport instead of cars. Meanwhile, users are fed up with the available information, delayed transport and too many applications for all the mediums of transport. After collecting insights, we sat down and created a scenario: By 2040 Oslos City Center will be free for cars, and there will be widespread focus on electric powered vehicles and means of transportation.

This led us to looking at different ideas for what the future might hold. We had a look at ‘Hyperloop’ and ‘Drone Transport’ for transport of both humans and things, but we saw them as less likely to be fully implemented by 2040, and also with a bigger downside. Our third idea was to create and develop solutions for ‘Universal Design’, but this was too wide, but at the same time not open enough. We landed on ‘Seamless Design of Public Transport’ and hence ‘Vy - Dør til dør’ was born. A universally designed transportation system for everyone, everywhere, every time, from door to door. Patent pending.

Time is a limited resource for most people and the limited flexibility of mobility is a concern for many. Why shouldn’t public transport adapt to its users? One might say it’s because of the limitations of resources and technology available today. But why would it not be a possibility in the future of mobility? This project provides a scenario grounded in actual user needs and the potential of Vy and other actors in the mobility market.
